Jivandan — Emergency Blood & Component Donation Network

The Challenge & Engineering Friction

Traditional blood donation and transfusion ecosystems face acute operational bottlenecks driven by inventory opacity and fragmented communication. In critical trauma, emergency surgery, and postpartum care scenarios, patients and medical staff are forced to scramble across disparate blood banks with zero visibility into real-time stock levels for specific ABO/Rh blood groups. This reliance on frantic phone calls and uncoordinated donor outreach frequently causes fatal delays during critical golden-hour medical interventions. Compounding the matching challenge is the high perishability of whole blood (which expires in 35 to 42 days) and platelets (which expire within 5 days). Without automated lifecycle tracking, inventory aging alerts, and rigorous audit trails, facilities endure substantial inventory spoilage while simultaneously facing acute shortages of rare blood groups. Furthermore, irregular donor records, manual verification bottlenecks, and absence of standardized digital donor identification hinder repeat donor retention and compromise public trust in emergency mobilization networks.

The Technical Solution & Architecture

ARdevlopers architected and engineered Jivandan—a mission-critical, full-stack 3-tier MVC healthcare application powered by Node.js, Express.js, Handlebars (HBS), and MongoDB with Mongoose ODM. The platform orchestrates a centralized multi-tenant network serving donors, blood banks, and health authorities through dedicated role-based portals. It incorporates a real-time 8-group stock matrix (A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+, O-), dynamic blood compatibility matching, and automated shelf-life calculation engines that strictly enforce the 42-day whole blood expiration cycle upon collection logging. To guarantee rapid emergency response, the solution features an urgent request escalation pipeline that broadcasts critical shortage alerts to eligible nearby donors while algorithmically enforcing mandatory 56-day inter-donation safety intervals. On the presentation layer, a high-contrast glassmorphic design system styled with custom CSS tokens (Crimson Vitality and Dark Slate Navy) delivers optimal visual hierarchy under high-stress operating conditions. Complete security was established via bcryptjs password encryption, JWT tokenization, HTTP-only session cookies, and comprehensive activity logging (activitylogs) for full clinical and regulatory audit compliance.

Core Architectural Decisions

3-Tier MVC Architecture & State Layer

Architected around a structured Model-View-Controller paradigm utilizing Node.js and Express.js with server-side rendered Handlebars views and Mongoose ODM. Schemas enforce strict validation across Donors, Blood Banks, Blood Requests, and Donation Histories with virtual properties for real-time age and eligibility computations.

Multi-Tier RBAC & Audit Security Layer

Employs defense-in-depth security with bcryptjs password hashing (10+ salt rounds), JWT-backed session tokens, and middleware route guards that enforce strict permissions across donors, bank managers, and system administrators. Every state alteration and emergency fulfillment is immutably logged to an activitylogs audit collection.

High-Availability Database & Cloud Infrastructure

Powered by MongoDB with compound indexing on blood groups, geolocation city/pincodes, and urgency levels for sub-180ms query execution. Designed for containerized deployment across cloud environments with serverless HTTP adaptation and high fault tolerance.

Key Engineering Features & Capabilities

Real-Time 8-Group Inventory Matrix: Live blood stock monitoring and threshold gauges across A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+, and O- with instant deduction upon request fulfillment.
Automated 42-Day Shelf-Life & Expiry Radar: Automatic expiration calculation upon donation check-in to prevent perishable spoilage and prioritize aging units.
Emergency Blood Request Pipeline: Urgency-classified dispatch queue (Low, Medium, High, Critical) with rapid status tracking from submission to hospital handover.
Role-Based Access Control (RBAC): Multi-tier isolation separating Donor profiles, Blood Bank inventory operations, and Super-Admin system governance.
Donor Pass & Safety Interval Guard: Digital donor passport with scannable QR verification and algorithmic enforcement of mandatory 56-day donation rest periods.
