State Management in Modern React 18 & 19: Why TanStack Query + URL State Outperforms Redux

State Management in Modern React 18 & 19: Why TanStack Query + URL State Outperforms Redux

The Global State Trap

For nearly a decade, the standard React advice was to reach for Redux, MobX, or Zustand at the very inception of a new project. Developers spent entire sprints creating action creators, reducers, selectors, and dispatched thunks just to fetch a list of items and display a loading spinner.

The fundamental flaw in this approach was failing to categorize the true nature of application state:

  1. Server State: Data that lives on a remote server, is asynchronously fetched, can be mutated by other users, and requires caching, revalidation, and background updates (e.g. Users, Inquiries, Projects, Invoices).
  2. Client State: Transient UI state that only lives in the user's browser (e.g. Is this modal open? Which tab is active? What is the current search query?).

When you try to manage Server State inside a Client State store like Redux, you are forced to re-invent caching, request deduplication, optimistic updates, and garbage collection from scratch.

The TanStack Query (React Query) Revolution

TanStack Query solves Server State cleanly by treating it as an asynchronous cache rather than global state:

  • Automatic Background Synchronization: Refetches stale data on window focus or network reconnect so users always see current records.
  • Request Deduplication: Multiple components calling the same query key trigger only one network request.
  • Optimistic UI Mutations: Instantly update the UI before the server responds, rolling back automatically if the request fails.
  • Built-in Status States: Provides isLoading, isError, isFetching, and data without a single line of reducer boilerplate.

Storing UI State in URL Search Parameters

For filtering, pagination, and multi-tab workflows, the best place to store Client State is directly in the URL query parameters (?category=web&page=2):

  • Shareable Links: Users can copy and paste URLs to coworkers or teammates, and the exact same filtered view renders instantly.
  • Browser History Integration: The Back and Forward browser buttons work automatically without custom history listeners.
  • Zero Memory Leaks: State resets naturally when the user navigates away, eliminating stale store bugs.

The Clean Modern React State Architecture

In modern React applications built by ARdevlopers: - Server Data: Handled 100% by TanStack Query. - Navigation & Filter State: Handled 100% by React Router useSearchParams. - Form State: Handled locally by react-hook-form paired with Zod validation. - Ephemeral UI: Handled by lightweight React useState or useContext (e.g. Dark/Light Theme toggle).

By following this separation, we eliminate over 80% of unnecessary boilerplate code while delivering faster, more predictable user experiences.
